CHANGES TO MEETINGS IN 2023 - PLEASE READ!

During the pandemic the Lacey Community Center (LCC)made some changes to their room usage.  The room where we have met is now being used on Thursdays by one of their own classes.  Instead of meeting in that room in 2023 we will have our meetings in a sectioned off area of the larger room where we hold the auction.

In January the LCC is always closed for the first two weeks so the meeting (Swap Meet) is always off our normal second Thursday schedule.  This year we were unable to reserve the room for the normal third Thursday.  Please make a note on your calendar that the meeting will be held on January 26th.

MEETING- NOVEMBER 10 - 7 PM - SCOTT ELSER

This month we will welcome  Scott Elser of Portland. You may remember that Scott visited us last September for our outdoor meetings where he delivered a masterclass on Japanese black pines. One of Scott’s pines won Best Conifer in 2008 and 2010 at the the US National Bonsai Show and Best of Show, the National Award, in 2012 One of Scott’s pines won Best Conifer in 2008 and 2010 at the the US National Bonsai Show and Best of Show, the National Award, in 2012.  We are looking forward to learning from him again.

OCTOBER MEETING- A REPORT

In October we had a visit from Dan Robinson who entertained us with stories of his long life of developing  trees and philosophy of bonsai (which he admits is radical).  He brought some beautiful trees to show us, including some he grew from seed brought back from Korea in the 1960s.  His breadth of knowledge is astounding, with ready answers to any and all questions thrown at him.  And if there is one take away from the night it’s “Miracle Grow”!

If you haven’t visited his Elandan Gardens, with over 300 trees to admire, make sure you make the trek sometime soon.  It is extraordinary

NOVEMBER WORKSHOP - 11/19 - 10 AM - 2PM  -  NORTH OLYMPIA FIRE STATION

This month the first part of the workshop will feature our experienced member and past club president Rick Casey.  He will be helping us learn about wiring and other methods of moving branches and shaping our trees.  He will bring tools for hand on practice.  This is a fantastic opportunity for new members to learn more about one of the key practices of bonsai.

OCTOBER WORKSHOP - A REPORT

Wow, it was a great turnout for the workshop.  Old friends and new showed up for the instruction and brought their questions and trees for help from our more experienced club members.  The October topic was winter care of pines.  Bill Olson, a former club president. came all the way from Packwood to help us learn. He and Joe brought gorgeous examples of trees for us to ogle.  Many thanks to Joe K. for recruiting speakers and organizing these workshops.  If you haven’t attended yet make sure to mark your calendar for upcoming events.

The club now offers not only lava rock but pre-sifted pumice and bags of pre-mixed soil.  If you are interested in having any of these brought to the November  meeting please fill out this form NO LATER than 11/8.  You can also contact Kent R. and make arrangements to pick it up directly from him. PLEASE RETURN YOUR EMPTIED LAVA BAGS TO KENT FOR RE-USE
