Please make a note on your calendar that the next meeting is not on its usual 2nd Thursday. Instead it will be the swap meet on the 4th Thursday, January 26th. All meeting dates for 2023 are listed at the end of the newsletter.
Speaking of the swap meet on January 26th at 7 p.m., this is your opportunity to bring plants, pots, tools and other Bonsai-related material you would like to trade or convert into cash. Or you can bring cash you would like to convert into better and/or more trees, pots, tools and other Bonsai-related material. Spoiler alert, there will be a surprise raffle!
The popular OBC teaching workshops continue into 2023. Joe K has organized the series with instruction tailored to the time of year. January’s topic: pots, tools and soils. If you haven’t been to a workshop recently, we meet from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the third Saturday (January 21st) at the North Olympia Fire Station.
If you have not paid your Membership Dues for 2023, please do so as soon as possible. Dues are $30 for a single person and $40 for a couple. Eduardo M will be accepting dues payments at the January 26th meeting. If you can’t make it, you can send them by mail:

December 17th was a magical night at the Pacific Bonsai Museum Winter Solstice Celebration. Bonsais were illuminated from within. Hundreds of mini white lights covered many of the bushes and the paths everywhere were illuminated with luminarias. In spite of the rain, the attendance was good, folks bundled up, packed their raincoats and flashlights, and enjoyed the frigid evening. Thank you to Iris T for the photos!
Andrew Robson and Jonas Dupuich will lead a shohin-focused weekend covering the basics of shohin bonsai. Daisaku Nomoto will be the featured guest from Miyazaki, Japan. Guests are encouraged to bring their shohins (max 8 per person) and tools. For further information click here: https://bonsaitonight.com/2022/12/30/introducing-shohin-school/
Darrell A is spearheading the club's participation in Lacey's Cultural Celebration on March 4, 2023, at St. Martins' University from 10am to 6pm. Volunteers are needed to tend the table for time slots of 1 hour or more and we will need about 10-12 trees for display. The trees need to be brought to the site by 9:30 am, and picked up at closing (6 pm). Darrell will be at the January 26 general meeting with sign up sheets for helping out and for bringing trees to display.
As the new newsletter editor and a rookie bonsai enthusiast, I welcome any contributions members want to send in. Any recommendations for a good source for monthly bonsai care advice for the Pacific NW? Write to me at Olympiabonsaiclub@gmail.com with your ideas.
