JUNE MEETING - A REPORT

CALENDAR OF EVENTS
Hopefully by now you’ve assessed your trees and bonsai paraphernalia and are getting ready to buy/sell and generally refresh your collection and supplies. It’s been three years since we’ve held an auction and we’re hoping this will be a good one. We know that there will be several very special trees as the club will be selling two that Dave DeGroot styled in June as well as one styled by Victrinia and Eric Ridgeway. At the end of the night, you might own a tree by a bonsai master!
If you have things to sell, please bring in your bonsai items starting at 6:00 - registration closes and the silent auction begins at 6:45 sharp this year! The live auction will begin at 7:00, and this year we are lucky to have the services of a professionally trained auctioneer, so bring your money and prepare for a night of fast paced fun. We will collect money from the buyers at the close of the auction. Payments must be made in either cash or checks. Checks to sellers will go in the mail the following week. The auction is one of the benefits of club membership but non members are welcome to come and see what is for sale. If they want to participate in the auction they will need to join the club, which they can do right then and there. In July membership goes to half price or $15 and lasts till the end of 2022.
Look for an email with more details (including forms to download if you want to arrive prepared)to arrive soon in your inbox.
For our June meeting, we invited Dave Degroot to work on rehabbing a black pine forest that he created for us a few years ago. One of the trees was eaten by a squirrel, leaving only 4 trees in the group. Dave found a replacement tree, then did some styling, needle thinning, and candle pruning on the existing forest and the new replacement fifth tree for the group. The replacement tree will have to be replanted next spring, so they're still in separate pots!
The work on the black pines was over quickly, so Dave brought out a hinoki cypress. This bushy little tree had an amazing base and curvy trunk hiding under all of its dense foliage. With just a little pruning Dave revealed the twisty trunk. Then he added a few pieces of wire to put more movement in the trunk, and send branches in the right direction.
Both of these trees will be available in our July auction, so you have a chance to own one of these amazing trees! The Hinoki Cypress will be going back to Dave to finish some wiring and styling before the auction.
For the past two months we have been able to hold workshops at the North Olympia FireStation. What a perk of club membership! A place to bring your trees, spread out on a big table and have the help of club experts to guide you. Check out the calendar of events below and get those dates onto your own calendar.
Remember that the club has an extensive library collection of books and magazines. You can search the collection and place things on hold and the items will be brought to the next meeting. Reach out to the Librarian to get the password to our Library. Once the password is entered, look for your name on the list. The catalog is here: https://www.librarycat.org/lib/OlympiaBonsaiClub
